Raise your understanding

There are lots of things you can do in the self-care room to grow your understanding. Here are some key things you need to know about self-care.

What self-care is

  • Self-care is about making a commitment to your own health and wellbeing.
  • Self-care is about doing those things that you consider important for your own health and wellbeing.
  • Self-care is about the having information, skills, and support that you need to manage your own health and wellbeing.
  • Self-care is about seeking help when you feel stressed or overwhelmed.

What self-care isn’t

  • Self-care isn’t selfish.
  • Self-care isn't a weakness or luxury.
  • Self-care isn’t only for people who are unwell.
  • Self-care isn’t the same for everyone.
  • Self-care isn’t just yoga and meditation.
  • Self-care isn't just being physically active, healthy eating, and sleeping well.
  • Self-care is more than that.

Some examples of self-care

  • Having a cup of tea and a chat with a co-worker.
  • Taking a walk outdoors in nature.
  • Taking your break.
  • Checking in with yourself.
  • Being physically active, healthy eating, and sleeping well.
  • Attending a yoga or mediation class.

Why self-care is important

  • Because your health and wellbeing are important.
  • Because aged care work can be demanding and exhausting, and it can burn you out.
  • Because if you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able take care of others.
  • Because the aged care sector needs skilled workers.
