Diversity at End of Life Matters

Every person’s journey is unique. Culture, language, faith, life experiences, and health all shape how someone sees themself - and how they understand death, dying, and the kind of care they wish to receive.

When you're supporting someone at the end of their life, your role is about more than just physical care. It's about truly seeing the person in front of you - recognising their story, their identity, and what matters most to them. This is especially important for people who may have experienced trauma, disadvantage or discrimination. In these moments, your compassion and understanding can make all the difference.

End of life is a part of life - and a meaningful part of the care journey. It’s often a deeply emotional and significant time for older people, their families, and for all of us who care for them.

As an aged care worker, you can make a difference at the end of life by:

  • taking the time to understand the identity, culture, and life story of the people you care for
  • reading the file notes and asking about their life story and what feels right for them
  • always introduce yourself and what you are there for
  • asking 'what matters most to you now' when providing care and taking their lead
  • offering choices so they feel safe and in control.

You don’t need to give up your own values or beliefs to provide person-centred care. You can be yourself, while also respecting the beliefs, customs, and choices of the person you're supporting.

Discuss the challenges and emotions associated with palliative and end-of-life care with trusted colleagues.
