A career in aged care is a rewarding experience but it can also sometimes be emotional and stressful when providing clients and their families with end of life palliative care. Taking care of yourself is important for your overall health and wellbeing and to continue providing quality care.
The Residential Aged Care Palliative Approach Toolkit (PA Toolkit)
Although the resource is not specifically targeted for people providing home care you may find it helpful.
The Residential Aged Care Palliative Approach Toolkit (PA Toolkit) offers a short video called Taking Care of Yourself Matters: An Introduction to Self-Care for Care Workers in Residential Aged Care about acknowledging and dealing with the grief of a resident dying. The video discusses suggestions about self-care and creating a supportive workplace to help manage experiences of loss and grief. There is also a companion Self-Care for Care Workers factsheet (106kb pdf). The PA Toolkit also has a printable bereavement support booklet that gives suggestions to help manage loss and grief for aged care staff working in residential aged care.
